From school groups to elderhostels, from wedding receptions to corporate gatherings, The Roundhouse Railroad Museum provides the perfect location for your next event. Our numerous historic buildings provide a rustic backdrop for an elegant program. Our large industrial complex is also a fantastic place for students to learn about the area's industrial history.


Student Tour

A docent will provide general information about the history and technology of the site and the impact of the railroad on the local and surrounding economies.

Start Times: 9:00 am - 4:00 pm
Cost: $5.00 per student - minimum 15 students

Lunch and Tour

This option features the above tour with a "Hobo" lunch consisting of a turkey or ham hoagie, chips, a fresh baked cookie & lemonade. Lunch may be arranged before or after your tour.

Start Time: 10:00 am
Cost: $13.00 per student - minimum 25 students

Student Spaghetti Dinner

This option offers the above tour coupled with a dinner in the Blacksmith Shop. During the meal, a balladeer will entertain your group with traditional railroad songs or a blacksmith will demonstrate his trade and converse with students. Dinner includes spaghetti with meat sauce, fresh garden salad, & beverages.

Start Times: 12:00 p m - 7:00pm
Cost: $18.00 per student - minimum 50 students

Field Trips

Tour Price: $5.00 per student/Comp 1 Teacher for every 20 students

Times: 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM; Tour lasts approximately 1 hour

Curriculum

  • Pre-K - 5th Grade: Students "become" a locomotive as they ride the massive turntable and learn how and why a roundhouse works. Group specific history lessons of the site and explanations of machinery and steam engines are included.
  • 6th - 12th Grades: A docent will provide general information about the history and technology of the site and the impact of the railroad on the local and surrounding economies. The teacher may determine a tour focus in areas of history, industry, chemistry, technology, and geography.

Grandfather Gordon

Students of all ages will have the opportunity to visit the nucleus of the railroad empire begun by Juliette Gordon Low's grandfather, William Washington Gordon. They will explore the impact of railroad transportation on the history of Georgia and Savannah. The students will tour the Roundhouse Railroad Museum complex and see first-hand examples of antebellum Southern technology. When available, blacksmithing demonstrations illustrate one of Juliette's many talents.

Program includes:

  • Guided Tour of the Roundhouse Railroad Museum's five acres and six buildings.
  • Demonstrations of an 1859 Portable Steam Engine and 19th century line and shaft machinery as well as large HO scale model railroad layout.
  • Special insight into women on the Railroad.

Cost and Booking:

The cost is $5.00 per person. Daytime minimum is 10 people. Nighttime minimum is 30 people. The program is offered 7 days a week from 9:00 am - 4:00 pm. We can also arrange for a delicious meal to be served with your program. Blacksmith demonstration is optional. Ask for details.
