OUR TEAM
The Coastal Heritage Society Railroad Operations Department operates and maintains the Roundhouse
Railroad Museums' collection of historic yet operational Steam and Diesel locomotives. The equipment
is operated as demonstration for our visitors and for an on-rail tour of the Central of Georgia's
Savannah Repair Shops complex. Several times yearly the entire collection is moved from within
the stalls of the Roundhouse to accommodate special events and programs, demonstrating the fully
operational capabilities of the motive power, turntable and Roundhouse.
The departments' crews and craftspeople also restore other historic passenger and freight rolling stock.
Recent projects include the restoration of a 1924 Fruit Growers Express wooden refrigerated boxcar, a 1918
Maine Central outside braced wooden boxcar and a pair of Central of Georgia executive office cars. All
of this equipment plus much more is now accessible to our visitors for touring.
The department not only operates, restores and conserves the rolling stock collection at the museum but
they also live the history that they preserve. The department manages and performs the same tasks,
trades and functions as the men and women who worked for the Central 150 years ago. They do it the same
way, in the same place and with the same pride as those that built what was The Central of Georgia Railroad.
The repair and maintenance of railroad equipment was the reason for the existence of this great facility, it
was the people that worked here that made it successful. This is the history.
