COLLECTIONS

Museums are like family scrapbooks. Museums preserve important objects and art works for communities or nations, much like families preserve their own histories in photographs and mementos.

The Curatorial Department at Coastal Heritage Society is responsible for preserving our community's artifacts and historical objects as well as creating exhibits from our museums' collections. We work to preserve these objects so that current and future generations of Savannahians and visitors alike can enjoy them.

The Curatorial Department supports all the other departments of Coastal Heritage Society. The Curator of Collections locates relevant objects and materials in the collection for research, programming, events, and exhibits conducted by various CHS departments.

Behind the scenes, our Curator of Collections, Lydia Moreton, is the caretaker of the museum objects. She is the "librarian" for the artifacts, giving each object a "call number" and maintaining a searchable database of information on every object. She handles the donation and loan paperwork, cleans and prepares the artifacts, makes special mounts or boxes that support objects for storage or exhibition, monitors environmental conditions, manages the budget, and administers the disaster plan.

More information about how we do all that we do, can be found at Exhibits and Saving Our Treasures.
