GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEMS (GIS)
GIS is a computer program for mapping and analyzing geographic data. GIS goes beyond simple
map making. At CHS, our GIS specialist Laura Seifert uses a GIS program to document archaeology
sites as well as analyze archaeological and historical data. With a GIS program, scientists
can examine aerial photography and satellite imagery, make models, and combine databases with
maps.
For example, Laura overlays information about both existing and demolished buildings, topographic
and environmental data, historic maps, and maps of archaeological finds. With GIS, we can
precisely determine how all of this data interacts, and we use that information to answer
captivating historical questions.
